I feel like we’re so used to managing the poor decisions and judgments that everyone else makes, it’s easy to forget we’re human and capable of the exact same decisions.
I sat in on a termination today that I was not remotely prepared for. As I was getting ready to go over offboarding details, the employee starts pressing for a reason for the termination. Initially we framed it as a business decision around their role being eliminated. They continue to press around performance and I stated without thinking that I “assume” performance considerations were apart of the broader decision making process but couldn’t confidently say one way or another as I was not apart of historical conversations. Ugh! Why didn’t I just stfu. I was completely scattered in that call and my self esteem is taking a hit today. I hate my job and am stretched thin, but I know better than to state things I don’t know or that are inconsistent with what we’ve already communicated.
Anyone care to share in my self loathing? 😂
